Meagher to Bob up in West End

FLAMIN' heck! Ray Meagher is leaving Home and Away - sort of.

The Gold Logie nominee who has played Alf Stewart on the long-running soap for 22 years, will take a six-month break from the show this year and make his debut on London's famed West End.

Meagher, 65, will take over the role of Bob in the colourful musical Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

"They (Home and Away) have very generously allowed me to do Priscilla in the West End from September 20 roughly until early March (next year)," Meagher said.

"I did two weeks in that role (as Bob) in Sydney when Michael Caton wanted to have a rest, and that is when the producers said, 'Do you want to do this in London?'

"I think the funniest thing for me is a bloke from the bush, who cannot sing or dance, has been asked to do a musical in the West End. That appeals to my perverse sense of humour."

Meagher, who is contracted to Home and Away until 2012, said Summer Bay would cope without the sensible, serious Alf for a couple of months.

Meagher is up for his first Gold Logie after a Facebook campaign by fans to get him nominated.

While thrilled at the nomination, he said he doubted he could win the trophy at the ceremony at Crown on May 2.

"I really was shocked and thought, you know, maybe I'm the token oldie there to make up the numbers, but it is very nice," he said.

"I have never seriously considered winning it. My theory is that the five comics will fight it out to see who can tell the funniest joke, and cancel one another out.

"Esther Anderson and I will sort of split the Home and Away vote, and Rebecca Gibney will waltz down the middle and pick it (gold) up again."

Saw him as Bob when he did it in Sydney. His singing was OK, not amazing, but at least he has an Australian accent.
